The Persian Era and Region: Overlooked Minor Nations for DBA Armies

This article is intended to provide DBA players with additional Army options for conducting DBA Campaigns in the era and region of ancient Persia. Most players never expected a complete list of available forces to be included in any Army Lists. This article covers those armies mentioned in "Armies of the Greek and Persian Wars", by Richard Nelson, WRG Press.

Many of these come from the vast region and era of the Persian Empire. The Persian vassals sent troops to combat outside enemies but they were often free to war against other vassal tribes over land claims or to fight intruders such as Xenophon's Expedition. The troop classifications are based on those cited in DBM but many are reasonable assumptions based on similar troop types of the era.

East Ethiopians were located along the Persian coastline near the Indus valley.
1 x 3Ax or 3Bw (G), 2 x 3Bw, 2 x 3Bw or 3Ax, 7 x 2Ps

Paracania was located along the Persian coastline.
1 x 3Cv or 2Lh (G), 2 x 2Lh, 2 x 3Ax, 2 x 3Bw, 4 x 2Ps, 1 x 3Ax or 2Lh or 3Bw

Caspians were located SE of the Caspian Sea.
1 x 3Cv or 2Lh (G), 2 x 2Lh, 3 x 3Ax, 3 x 3Bw, 2 x 2Ps, 1 x 3Ax or 2Lh or 3Bw

Drilae and Chalybes were located in NE Asia Minor and fought Xenophon's army
1 x 3Ax or 3Wb (G), 7 x 3Wb or 3Ax, 4 x 2Ps (J)

Colchia, Mares, Saspires and Alarodes were located west of the Caspian Sea.
1 x 3Ax (G), 5 x 3Ax, 4 x 2Ps (J), 2 x 3Ax or 3Wb or 2Lh

Pissidians, Milyae and Cabelees were located in southern Asia Minor.
1 x 3Ax or 2Lh (G), 1 x 2Lh, 4 x 3Ax, 4 x 2Ps (J), 2 x 3Bw or 2Ps

Tibareni and Moschi were located along the Black Sea.
1 x 4Sp or 4Wb (G), 2 x 4Wb or 4Sp, 4 x 2Ps (J), 2 x 2Lh, 3 x 3Ax or 4Wb

Macrones and Mossynoeci were located in Asia Minor; also fought Xenophon's Expedition.
1 x 4Bd (axe armed) or 4Sp or 4Wb (G), 3 x 4Sp, 2 x Ps, 2 x 2Ps or 2Lh, 4 x 4Sp or 4Wb or 4Ax

Sagartian or Sarangae were nomads located in the area of Pakistan and Afghanistan. Their LH is noted as using the lasso.

The Arians and Pactyes were located on the eastern border of the Persian Empire in Pakistan and Afganistan.

Utians and Mycians were located in southeastern Persia.

Ligyes, Marianoeni were located in Asia Minor.
